Herrera calls on farmers to double time amid crisisThis is a featured page

GARCIA-HERNANDEZ–To brace for the impact of the economic crisis, Vice-Governor Julius Caesar Herrera advised farmers to double their efforts in coping with the hardship besetting the agriculture sector.

The vice-governor, who chairs the Provincial Board Committee on Agriculture, issued the call during the year-end assessment and Christmas program of the farmers centered on the theme “Panaghiusa Alang sa Kalamboan,” held last Friday at Roxas Park in barangay Calma.

Federated Farmers Cooperative president Boy Galendo said that Herrera’s message has boosted the farmers drive to plant more as one of the solutions to arrest the global food crisis.

Mayor Myrna Schreurs and Councilor Tita Baja Gallentes, the mayoralty candidate of this town for 2010, also graced the gathering.

Galendo also echoed the same call to farmers who held their Banana Congress in barangay Mayana, Jagna town organized by Engr. Vicente Loquellano.

Loquellano, who is gunning for city councilor, said banana growers are grateful to Herrera’s support to the efforts of making the banana industry in the province alive.

He said the Vice-Governor’s Office has allotted financial assistance that raised the morale of the farmers.

Herrera recognized that banana farming is one sector that is making agriculture here afloat as he noted that the “bongan” variety is making waves in other countries, especially Japan.

Bongan
banana producers are growing the fruit organically which the vice governor wanted to continue, considering that organic farming maintains healthy populace and healthy lifestyle.

He said the campaign for backyard gardening, under his pet program of barangay green revolution, by subsidizing vegetable seeds to every household has started to bear fruits, not only in terms of harvest, but also in nutrition.

Promoting backyard vegetable gardening in the barangays, in cooperation with other offices, has already benefited about 30 of the 47 towns and at least 718 of the 1,109 barangays, he said. (RVO)
