A message delivered in sound and images makes a stronger and longer impression in a person’s memory than a written document or manuscript or even a long lecture. More so, if a message is conveyed in an artistic manner.

Such was the strategy in communicating not only to the youth but to the general public as well; to increase awareness on vital issues related to Maternal Care, Responsible Parenthood, Gender Sensitivity and Reproductive Health (RH) at the Bohol Arts for Life Extravaganza 2009 held at the Island City Mall (ICM) Activity Center on the afternoon of December 28, 2009 which was one of the highlights of the observance of the Special Day for Street Children and the Disadvantaged Youth which timely also falls on Innocents Day.

The event gathered young artists not only from the three UNFPA program areas (Carmen, Talibon and Ubay) but also from the neighboring towns of Maribojoc, Cortes and Antequera.

More interestingly so, is that the contestants are not professional performers but rather are Boholano children hailing from the affected barangays where the strong manifestations of the negative effects of unplanned/unwanted pregnancies, teen aged pregnancy, violence, depravation and a host more issues and problems relating to either lack of proper knowledge on Reproductive Health Rights (RHR), concerns, issues and lack services and facilities as well. Thus making their portrayals and performances full of passion and inspiration for they are performing not fiction, but rather telling their own stories and experiences.

Victors at the extravaganza were the TEAMATES Group from Tagbilaran City, with their Dance Drama entitled “Life Matters”, with LGU Carmen Group got 2nd Place with their performance entitled “Ang Pamilya” (“The Family”) and LGU Maribojoc Group got the 3rd Place with their performance entitled “Pagmahay” (“Regret”). The Band Contest winners were Blitzkrieg of Tagbilaran with their piece titled “Back To A Time”, 2nd placer was Zee Method of Carmen with their piece titled “Not Now” while LGU Talibon Youth Band got 3rd place with their piece titled “Para Sa Kaugmaon” (“For the Future”). Prizes to both categories were P12,000 (+ trophy) for the 1st placer, P10,000 (+ trophy) 2nd placer, P7,500 (+ trophy) 3rd placer. But the other participants did not come home empty handed as they were also given a consolation prize of P2,000 with a trophy to boot.

The objectives of this artistic endeavor are first and foremost, to raise greater awareness on the inter-related themes on Reproductive Health, population development, gender within the context of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) deliverable beyond the targeted beneficiaries, thus expanding the mileage over the entire province. Second, to mobilize potentials of music and other traditional and modern performing arts as a means to advocate significant themes and developmental issues and thirdly, top provide a venue for Bohol’s musical and performing arts talents to promote, explore and hone their cultural skills.

The event materialized thru the concerted efforts and collaboration of the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Population Commission (PopCom), LGUs Carmen, Talibon, Ubay, Maribojoc Antequera and Cortes, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Department of Education, Island City Mall (ICM) local radio stations DYTR and DYRD and Teatro Bol-Anon.
